BHUBANESWAR:Considering seniority, he is the best. Considering his honesty, dedication, and ability, no one can deny his qualifications.
Dr. Sudhanshu Sarangi (1990-batch IPS, Odisha cadre) is generally considered a strong and credible candidate for Odisha DGP. He is one of the top names in the panel forwarded by the state police headquarters (along with Susanta Kumar Nath and R.P. Koche), with the final selection involving the state government and UPSC empanelment.
Key Strengths
Seniority and Experience: He is among the seniormost eligible officers (1990 batch) with decades of diverse experience, including anti-Naxal operations (as DIG Operations and IG), SP in multiple districts, Director of State Crime Records Bureau (where he pushed technology in policing), Twin City Police Commissioner (Bhubaneswar-Cuttack), and current roles like DG Fire Services, Home Guards, and Civil Defence.
Academic and Professional Credentials: He holds a PhD in Psychology (University of Liverpool, UK), MSc in Investigative Psychology, is a Chevening Scholar, qualified para-trooper, and has contributed as a columnist. This background supports intelligence-based, community-oriented, and reform-focused policing.
Notable Achievements: Solved high-profile cold cases, e.g., tracking down the main accused in the 1999 Barang gang rape after 22 years. Led drives against drug peddlers, food adulteration, and major crimes like gold heists during his time as Commissioner. Praised for COVID management, technology integration in policing, and proactive leadership in fire services.
Awards: President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2014), Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2007), and others.
Public Perception: Many view him as professional, efficient, disciplined, and people-friendly. There is visible public and social media support for his candidacy, with emphasis on his integrity and capability for stronger law-and-order leadership.
Potential Concerns: There are occasional allegations of corruption (like related to past recruitment exams like SI selections) and criticism in some public comments or interviews, though these appear unproven or politically motivated in many cases. No major recent convictions or disqualifying scandals are prominent in reliable reports.
An older instance involved his wife’s domestic help (a home guard) alleging mistreatment, leading to a suicide attempt; Sarangi responded by promising inquiry and medical support, but it drew some negative attention. Past empanelment issues (like., not getting central deputation earlier due to adverse remarks) highlight internal bureaucratic rivalries common in IPS, not necessarily performance failures.
Overall Assessment: Sarangi stands out for his blend of operational experience, academic depth, innovation in policing, and leadership in challenging roles. He could bring a reformist, tech-savvy, and psychologically informed approach to the DGP post, which many in Odisha seem to welcome amid calls for better accountability and crime control. DGP appointments ultimately depend on government priorities, UPSC recommendations, and political considerations beyond pure merit. Compared to peers in the panel, his seniority and profile make him a very viable option. This is based on publicly available information as of mid-2026; the actual appointment (as incumbent DGP Y.B. Khurania’s tenure ends around August 2026) may have additional factors.
