BHUBANESWAR: Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister on 25 July 2026 amid nationwide student protests (including those coordinated around the Cockroach Janta Party/CJP) over NEET-UG irregularities, paper leaks, and related issues that included reported student suicides. He cited the need to prevent exploitation by “anti-national forces,” protect students’ futures from legal complications, and allow focus on studies.
In Odisha, this is a significant development because Pradhan has long been one of the BJP’s most influential leaders there—credited with organisational groundwork that helped the party end BJD’s long rule and form its first state government in 2024. He retains substantial clout: multiple reports note that a large share of BJP legislators and roughly a dozen cabinet ministers in the Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi government are viewed as his loyalists, and some accounts state he had even proposed Majhi’s name for CM.
Pre-existing reports of a “cold war” or factional distance between Pradhan’s camp and Majhi’s (visible in events such as limited ministerial attendance during one of Pradhan’s earlier home visits) are likely to intensify. With Pradhan free of the Education Ministry, he has more bandwidth to engage in state organisational work, strategy, and politics. This fuels talk of a larger role for him in Odisha (organisational strengthening, potential leadership shift, or continued national-level utility with a state focus). No official decision has been announced.
BJD (Naveen Patnaik) and others had pressed for accountability on NEET. Patnaik praised Gen Z and framed the outcome as a democratic win for youth voices and public opinion. The resignation gives the opposition material to criticise BJP governance and keep education/exam integrity issues alive in state discourse.
Pradhan’s continued influence could help consolidate BJP’s still-relatively-new government and cadre base, especially given his past role in expanding the party. Conversely, visible factionalism risks short-term unease or perception of instability. Local reactions in places like his hometown Talcher mixed pride in his stature with disappointment at the exit.
It shifts some political attention from national NEET protests back to state-level leadership questions and BJP’s ability to manage its Odisha unit while governing.
Majhi (a tribal leader from Keonjhar, four-time MLA, chosen in 2024 partly for demographic and other strategic reasons) publicly praised Pradhan’s resignation as reflecting “high ideals,” principles, sense of responsibility, and commitment to public service. He highlighted Pradhan’s role in education reforms including NEP 2020 and wished him success in future service.
However, the Majhi camp is reported to be uneasy, the fear is that Pradhan’s greater availability in Odisha politics could strengthen pressure for change, especially amid any government controversies and given Pradhan’s longstanding stature and loyalist base among MLAs/ministers. Talk of possible replacement has circulated in political circles, though both camps have largely stayed tight-lipped and no formal move has been indicated.
Majhi’s position ultimately depends on the BJP central leadership (Modi/Shah high command), which selected him and prioritises stability, tribal outreach, and overall party interests. He is not automatically threatened, but the resignation removes a constraint on Pradhan’s state-level engagement and keeps leadership questions alive. Outcomes could range from continued status quo (with Pradhan active organisationally or in another national role), greater coordination, or eventual realignment—none of which is decided yet.
In short, the resignation ends one chapter of national pressure while opening a new phase of uncertainty and potential recalibration inside Odisha BJP. Official signals from the party high command will clarify the direction more than current speculation.
