Police steps up probe into Puri gangrape

PURI/BHUBANESWAR: Cuttack headquarters Central Police range DIG, Asish Kumar Singh has said that the chargesheet in the gangrape case of a minor girl in Puri town would be filed in 20 days as the case has been taken up on a priority basis. “We will also seek conduct of the trial in a fast-track court. It will be ensured that special lawyers are given the charge of the case so that all the culprits get severe punishment,” the DIG said.

The victim’s statement was recorded under Section 164 CrPC in the presence of Magistrate. A case under Sections 363, 376 (DA) and 394 IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, (POCSO) has been registered,” Singh flanked by Puri SP Umashankar Dash informed.

“Four teams have been formed to investigate the case. Dismissed Constable and prime accused Jitendra Sethi and one Rajesh Sethi have been arrested and forwarded to court. A hunt is on to nab the other two accused,” said the DIG.

The DIG further said another case has also been registered against accused Jeetandra for possessing a police ID card despite being dismissed from service. “Misuse of police ID card is a criminal offence. So, another case has been registered against him.”

Reports said the girl was waiting near the Nimapara bus terminal on Monday to return to her home at Kakatpur in Puri district when four persons offered her help. Later, they allegedly abducted her and took her to a Government quarters, which had been allotted to Jitendra near the Jhadeswari Club in Puri town. While Jitendra and Rajesh raped the girl, the other two accused locked the door and left the spot.

Narrating her ordeal to mediapersons, the victim said, “I was returning to Kakatpur from Bhubaneswar in a bus. I alighted from the bus at Nimapara to have food and missed the bus. When I was standing at the bus terminal, a person introduced himself as a policeman by showing his identity card and offered me help. Later, four persons took me to Jitendra’s quarters in Puri by a car where two of them raped me.”

 “After the rapists drank and fell asleep, I called a person through the window and managed to escape with the wallet of one of the accused, which contains a police identity card,” she added.Later, she lodged a complaint at the Kumbharapada police station in Puri accusing the involvement of a policeman whose name was mentioned in the identity card.
