Odisha Government -Narayani Sons Pvt Ltd Faces Off Over Penalty Issue

BHUBANESWAR/BARBIL: The Dinanath Passary founded and Vivek Passary and Vinay Passary run, Narayani Sons Pvt Ltd, which also runs 2 more firms, like Beekay Steel and Power Limited and Ores India Pvt Ltd, has been at loggerheads with Naveen Patnaik led Government in Odisha over penalty issue imposed for illegal mining and forest laws violation.

Instead paying penalty, Narayani Sons Pvt Ltd is hiring high paid lawyers in New Delhi to fight against Odisha Government and trying hard to minimise the fine amount through legal battle, sources said. Naraayani Sons (P) Ltd, M/s Ores India Pvt. Ltd & Beekay Steels and Power Ltd are the flagship companies of Passary group. Massive illegal mining were found at Narayani  Sons Pvt Ltd run Lahupada iron ore mines under Joda circle of Keonjhar.

Few days back, the Supreme Court had asked Odisha Government to file an additional affidavit in 3 weeks regarding the pending penalty on Narayani Sons Pvt Ltd for violation of environment norms and mining without consent to operate.

The Company told the Supreme Court that it had paid all the dues along with interest to Odisha Government for alleged environmental clearance violations and urged the SC to grant it permission to lift and sell extracted ore. But Odisha Government submitted that the Lessee hasn’t paid all the dues and Government sough time from Court to file an affidavit giving details of dues pending on Narayani Sons Pvt Ltd.

Sources said, despite frequent reminders, mining companies in Odisha have not paid over Rs 6,000 crore in fines to the Odisha government for illegal extraction of iron and manganese ores between 2000-01 and 2010-11.

While enquiring into the multi-crore mining scam in Odisha, Justice M.B Shah Commission has detected huge irregularities, including over exploitation of mineral and causing environment pollution. The commission had reported a loss of Rs 60,000 crore to the State exchequer for a number of violations made by mining companies. The Supreme Court had ordered mining companies to pay penalty over Rs 21,000 crore, defaulters were yet to deposit more than Rs 6,000 crore.
