NEW DELHI:Supreme Court told that Odisha promoted an ADGP to the rank of DGP last night, allegedly in anticipation of a vacancy and Central government approval, amid the pending challenge over selection of the State DGP.

Senior Advocate P Chidambaram tells CJI Surya Kant-led Bench that the promotion, effected after the matter was mentioned yesterday, is an attempt to circumvent the Supreme Court’s judgment.
Supreme Court agrees to take up the matter tomorrow. UPSC meeting will not be held in the meantime.
Sr Adv P Chidambaram: The main case is coming on 18th. They have promoted an ADGP last night to DGP in anticipation of the vacancy, in anticipation of the Central government’s approval.
CJI Surya Kant: Yes.
Sr Adv P Chidambaram: Tomorrow, My Lord, Your Lordship may list it. I am supporting this application because it’s an attempt to circumvent the judgment.
How many ways can they find to violate the law?
They violated it yesterday by promoting in anticipation of a vacancy and in anticipation of the Central government approval. That is yesterday, after I mentioned the matter.
Therefore, this UPSC has stopped.
I have served notice. Your Lordship may list it tomorrow.
UPSC: We will not have the meeting.
CJI: Okay
Matter to be taken up tomorrow.
