BHUBANESWAR:The Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a prestigious National CME programme and Live Surgical Workshop on “Secondary Procedures in Brachial Plexus Injury.” Held on 21 and 22 August 2026, the two-day academic programme marked a significant milestone in the Department’s decade-long journey of clinical service, surgical innovation, training and academic excellence.
The 36-bedded modern Burn Centre at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, dedicated exclusively to comprehensive burn management, is among the advanced burn care units in Eastern India. The Centre provides comprehensive acute burn care, reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation services for burn survivors.
Over the past decade, the Burn Centre has successfully treated more than 1,500 burn patients, including critical and high-profile cases from Odisha and neighbouring states. The Centre has also provided skin allograft support for burn victims referred from other healthcare institutions.
The Department’s decade-long journey is further reflected in more than 7,000 reconstructive and corrective surgeries, including over 500 microsurgeries, 300 brachial plexus injury reconstructions, 300 congenital anomaly corrections, 200 Smile Train cleft lip and palate surgeries, more than 250 RBSK cases and around 3,000 trauma cases.
Looking ahead, the Department plans to establish specialised subspecialty clinics, strengthen simulation-based surgical training, expand hyperbaric oxygen therapy, initiate hand transplantation, and establish a Skin Bank and Tissue Transplantation Unit. A major future objective is to further develop the Burn Centre into a Centre of Excellence in Burn Care, with continued emphasis on advanced treatment, research, innovation, rehabilitation and surgical training.
Congratulating the Department and all stakeholders on the successful completion of a decade, AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas appreciated the significant contributions of the Burn Centre and expressed confidence that the Department would achieve many more milestones in the years ahead.
The two-day workshop brought together more than 100 delegates from across India. The anniversary celebrations were graced by Dr. Sambit Patra, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Puri Lok Sabha Constituency, and Padmashree Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Former Director, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, as Chief Guests.
The programme was organised under the leadership of Dr. Sanjay Kumar Giri, Head, Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Among others, Dr. Dillip Kumar Parida, Dr. Manaswini Mangaraj, Dr. Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, Medical Superintendent, Lt. Col. Abhijit Sarkar, DDA, Dr. Praveen Bhardwaj, Dr. R. Srikanth, and Dr. Binayak Mishra graced the occasion.
The scientific programme featured expert lectures, live surgical demonstrations, video demonstrations, poster presentations and a quiz focused on advanced secondary procedures for brachial plexus injury, including restoration of shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand function.
