BHUBANESWAR:A significant milestone in advanced vascular and interventional treatment in Odisha has been achieved with the unveiling of the state’s first AngioJet Thrombectomy System at SUM Ultimate Medicare here.
AngioJet is an advanced and minimally invasive technology used to rapidly remove blood clots from blocked blood vessels. Instead of performing major open surgery, an Interventional Radiologist can introduce a small catheter into the affected blood vessel through a tiny puncture. The AngioJet system then helps break down and remove the clot enabling quick restoration of blood flow, Dr. Sambit Kumar Pattanayak, Consultant and Head of the Department of Interventional Radiology at Sum Ultimate Medicare, said.
The technology can be particularly useful in selected patients suffering from Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) where large blood clots develop in the veins of the leg or pelvis. If left untreated, such clots can lead to serious complications, including pulmonary embolism and long-term swelling and pain of the affected limb, he said.
AngioJet can also be used in selected cases of acute arterial thrombosis where a sudden blood clot causes blockage of the blood supply to an arm or leg threatening the limb. It may also be useful for removing clots from dialysis access such as AV fistulas or grafts, helping restore their function. It can be put to use to treat other selected vascular conditions involving significant clot burden, Dr. Pattanayak said.
One of the major advantages of AngioJet is that treatment can be performed through a small pinhole-sized puncture without major surgery. In appropriately selected patients, this may help achieve rapid clot removal, restoration of blood flow and faster recovery, he said adding the introduction of the first AngioJet system in Odisha is an important step towards bringing advanced, minimally invasive vascular treatment closer to patients of the state and neighbouring regions.
With availability of this facility, patients with complex blood clots who previously required to visit referral centres outside the state for treatment can now have access to this advance thrombectomy technology in Bhubaneswar.
