BHUBANESWAR:A multidisciplinary medical team at the IMS and SUM Hospital-2 at Phulnakhara successfully diagnosed and managed a rare and life-threatening case of delayed postpartum haemorrhage known as uterine artery pseudoaneurysm recently.
A woman came to the hospital with severe per-vaginal bleeding three days after she underwent caesarean section and was haemodynamically unstable due to significant blood loss. She was immediately stabilised in the ICU by the Critical Care team led by Dr. Suvankar, the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department team led by Dr. Abhijeet and Nephrology department team led by Dr. Hapi Patra.
A uterine artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare and severe vascular lesion where a hole in the wall of the uterine artery allows blood to leak into surrounding tissue.
Availability of advanced diagnostic facilities and specialized expertise enabled rapid identification of the underlying cause of bleeding. CT Angiography confirmed uterine artery pseudoaneurysm as the source of bleeding.
The Interventional Radiology team led by Dr. Srikant Sundara promptly performed uterine artery embolisation successfully controlling the haemorrhage and avoiding the need for major surgery. The patient improved following the procedure and was discharged in a stable condition after an uneventful recovery within a week.
The case highlights that advanced medical facilities, timely diagnosis and coordinated multidisciplinary expertise could play a crucial role in managing rare and potentially life-threatening obstetric emergencies.
