BHUBANESWAR: The 5G mechanics compared to previous wireless network generations and practical applications of the cutting-edge technology figured at a one-day seminar organised at the Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER), faculty of engineering of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University (SOA) here.

The seminar ‘5G and Cybersecurity’ was jointly organised by the Atal Incubation Centre-SOA Foundation and ITER’s Departments of Electronic Communication Engineering and Computer Science Engineering.

Prof. Ashutosh Dutta of John Hopkins University, USA, who was the resource person, highlighted open forums, simulation software, professional societies and initiatives linked to 5G which offered valuable resources for beginners and seasoned professionals alike.

Describing it as a complex landscape, Prof. Dutta provided practical suggestions to make sense of the same.

The enlightening seminar fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration with the academic community was attended by heads of departments, senior professors and Ph.D scholars.

Prof. Dutta said the network should be designed in such manner that it would be adaptable, resilient and flexible to support emerging applications. The 5G network gave rise to additional security pillars which offered in-built security, he said.

A systematic approach to threat analysis and threat taxonomy was essential to understanding associated risks and mitigation techniques, he said adding a careful analysis of existing security controls was necessary to investigate the gaps in mitigating new threats.

Prof. Dutta also emphasized on collaboration among operators, vendors, regulators and academia.

Prof. Manas Kumar Mallick, Director, ITER, felicitated Prof. Dutta while Prof. Renu Sharma, Additional Dean (Student Affairs) coordinated the seminar.
