As Malkangiri is a leftwing insurgency-hit district, the sniffer dogs played a vital role in inspection, investigation, and operations. Buddy was working with Malkangiri Police for the last four years and was very close to SP Rishikesh Dnyandeo Khilari. SP Rishikesh Dnyandeo Khilari too got emotional after hearing the sad demise of ‘Buddy’. Senior officers mourned the death of the sniffer dog Buddy and said that the loss is irreparable for the District police unit.

‘Buddy’ was laid to rest with full police honours including gun salute following its death at Malkangiri under South-Western Range of Odisha. The sniffer dog was suffering from illness for a few days and breathed his last this morning at around 9 am.

Buddy played a very important role in inspection during the visit of VVIPs including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The sniffer dog also imparted service during Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, the police said.
