BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has written to Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat requesting for Nomination of Ratha Yatra of Shree Jagannatha, Puri for inscription on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The Chief Minister draws attention to a proposal submitted by the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA), Puri, seeking UNESCO nomination for the Ratha Yatra (the famous chariot festival of Lord Jagannatha in Puri).
He describes the festival as more than a religious event — a living civilisational tradition that reflects India’s cultural diversity, inclusivity, spirituality, craftsmanship, music, dance, and community participation. It has been celebrated for centuries, draws millions of devotees and visitors worldwide, and is presented as one of the enduring symbols of India’s living heritage. Inscription on the UNESCO list would strengthen global recognition and help preserve and promote it for future generations.
All prescribed supporting materials have already been submitted by SJTA. Majhi requests the Minister’s personal intervention to facilitate examination of the proposal and the Ministry of Culture’s support so the nomination can be taken forward with UNESCO at the earliest. The Odisha government and SJTA are ready to provide any further information or assistance required.
The letter ends with a request for priority support and the process requires the central government’s endorsement before UNESCO can consider the file.
