Exchange of Fire with Police killed 165 in 10 years in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Minister of State (MoS) for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra while replying a question of BJP member Jayanarayan Mishra in the Assembly on Monday said that  165 persons were killed and 187 injured in the exchange of fire with police in Odisha in the last ten years till date from November 2010-19.

A total of 115 exchanges of fire between Maoists and security personnel have taken place between 2015 and 2019 (October 31), the minister said.

In the incidents, three state police personnel, three central security force employees and 11 people had lost their lives.

Mishra also informed that the state government is implementing a Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme to bring the Maoists into the mainstream.

Mishra told the Assembly  that  2,502 rape cases have been registered up to September this year.

Mishra said that 1,430 rapes including 604 rapes of minors were reported in the first six months (Jan-June) of the year, an average of four cases each day.

At least 1,073 rape cases were disposed off in 2018, while 197 persons were found guilty, which amounts to 18.35 per cent conviction rate, the minister said.

He informed that 876 cases ended with acquittals in 2018.The state government has published a notification to set up 24 special courts to deal with cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Twenty one more special courts will also set up in the state, Mishra added.
