BHUBANESWAR:Berhampur Town Police have arrested Suraj Kumar Mishra (51) of Old Town, Bhubaneswar, in connection with Berhampur Town PS Case No. 410 dated 07.09.2026, registered under Sections 318(4)/316(2)/3(5) BNS.
The case relates to an alleged land fraud involving ₹1.40 crore. The complainant, Lalit Mohan Mangaraj (49), Advocate, of Sashtri Nagar, Berhampur, had entered into agreements for sale dated 05.01.2023 and 24.01.2023 with the power-of-attorney holders of land measuring Ac.4.1120 dec. at Mouza Shankarpur under Berhampur Tahasil. The total deal was fixed at ₹2.77 crore.
The complainant alleged that he paid ₹1.40 crore as advance through bank and cash. Subsequently, ₹60,000 was also paid to the accused through GPay on 13.02.2025 towards legal heir certificate expenses. Despite receiving the money, the accused allegedly failed to execute the sale deed or return the amount and secretly sold the land to a third party. When the complainant demanded his money, he was allegedly threatened.
During investigation, agreement papers, affidavits and GPay transaction documents were seized, and witnesses were examined.
The accused was initially called under Section 35(3) BNSS on 07.09.2026. After being released, he allegedly threatened the complainant over a WhatsApp voice call to withdraw the case. For violating the notice conditions, he was arrested on 08.09.2026 at 10.00 AM and forwarded to the Hon’ble SDJM Court, Berhampur, with a prayer for 15 days’ judicial custody.
Further investigation is underway to arrest the other co-accused and recover the cheated money.
