CUTTACK/BHUBANESWAR: IGP Central Range Dr Satyajit Naik has reacted to the Banapur Death Case in Nayagarh. IGP Dr Naik said Preliminary inquiry and material collected so far do not substantiate allegations of custodial death or mob lynching in the death of Tofan Nayak. IGP also highlighted key findings on this inncident.
Key findings:
Police rescued Tofan Nayak after receiving an ERSS-112 call regarding his detention on suspicion of theft.
CCTV footage reportedly shows him alive, conscious and moving freely inside Banapur Police Station.
Medical examination was offered, but he allegedly did not cooperate. His parents signed a Zimmanama and took him home without alleging assault.
At CHC Banapur, the family reportedly stated that no one had assaulted him and suggested he may have sustained injuries after a fall.
A named FIR (Banapur PS Case No. 254/2026) has been registered, and three accused have been apprehended. The exact cause of death will be established through the post-mortem report and scientific investigation.
The investigation is continuing, and further action will be taken based on forensic evidence and the final outcome of the probe.
