Akhileswar Singh shifted, 4 Cops suspended in Puri-Sundargarh

PURI/SUNDARGARH/BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Government has shifted  Puri SP Akhileshvar Singh and appointed Sambalpur SP Kanwar Vishal Singh at his place and  also suspended Biramitrapur police station’s inspector-in-charge Smruti Prava Pradhan for ‘dereliction of duty’ and ‘gross negligence’ in connection with the Sundargarh custodial death.

Sub-inspector Biplab Kumar Pradhan, constable Jagannath Swain and constable Babuli Behera, all of Baselisahi police station, have been suspended in connection with the Puri custodial death.

The opposition members stormed the well of the State Assembly hall raising anti-police slogans and demanding immediate suspension and arrest of those who allegedly beat K Ramesh (30) and Mohammad Tariq (28) to death on Thursday at Baselisahi (Puri) and Biramitrapur (Sundargarh) police stations, respectively.

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Friday expressed “deep aguish” over the alleged custodial death of one K Ramesh in Puri town and issued a notice to the State Government to submit a report in this regard to it within four weeks.The notice was issued to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP).The OHRC commented that a death in custody is “not acceptable”.The commission’s move followed in response to a petition filed human rights activist Manoj Jena.
