NEW DELHI/BHUBANESWAR: History was written on Saturday after GC Murmu becoming first Odia, to take oath as India’s 14th CAG. President Ram Nath Kovind administering oath at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi bringing jubilations in Odisha, particularly among Tribal communities in State’s Mayurbhanj district.
“At a ceremony held today (August 8, 2020) at 1030 hrs in the Ashoka Hall, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Shri Girish Chandra Murmu was sworn in as the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India. He made and subscribed to the oath of office before the President.Shri Girish Chandra Murmu will have a tenure upto 20.11.2024,” a release from Rashtrapati Bhawan said.
In October 2019, he became the 1st Lt. Governor of J&K, after it became a new Union Territory. From which he resigned on 5th August and became the CAG on Thursday replacing Rajiv Mehrishi.
Girish Chandra Murmu assumed office as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India here today. He belongs to Indian Administrative Service of Gujrat cadre (1985 batch). Murmu succeeds Rajiv Mehrishi, who demitted office on Friday. Prior to this, Murmu was the first Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy to Murmu at a function in the Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, outgoing CAG Rajiv Mehrishi, were among the dignitaries present at the occasion.
After the oath ceremony, Murmu came to the CAG office, where he was welcomed by the senior officers of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department. He then offered floral tributes at the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and B R Ambedkar at the CAG office.
Before moving to J&K, Murmu served as Joint Secretary in the Department of Expenditure, Additional Secretary in the Department of Financial Services and Department of Revenue and then Special Secretary before serving as full-fledged Secretary of the Department of Expenditure. Before his tenure in Delhi, Shri Murmu has served on important assignments in the State Government of Gujrat. He has wide experience in administrative, economic and infrastructure fields.
CAG Murmu, hails from a small town called Betnoti, in tribal-dominated Mayurbhanj district. One of their brothers, Sirish is a chief general manager in Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai while another, Siba Shankar, is an Indian railway service officer currently posted in Mysore. Manoj is a state government employee. The two other brothers, Dilip and Sarat, are into farming.
