GHAZIABAD/CUTTACK: Finally, Odisha Vigilance arrested fugitive Odia IPS officer of 1991 batch of Tripura-Manipur cadre Joydeep Nayak on graft charges.
Nayak, who was on the run ever since the Vigilance police of Odisha booked him on June 21, was arrested from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.Nayak was produced in the local CJM Court and would be brought to Odisha on transit remand.
Nayak had, however, escaped immediate arrest as by that time he had already returned to his parent Tripura cadre after completion of deputation. But the Odisha police tracked him to a New Delhi Government hospital, from where he again escaped giving a slip to Vigilance sleuths on June 23. Subsequently, the Tripura Government placed him under suspension and the Orissa High Court also refused to grant him anticipatory bail.
The Vigilance police had registered an FIR against Nayak for his alleged key role in misappropriation of Rs 88 lakh meant for computer education of SC and ST students while being on deputation he was working in Odisha as IGP in the Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC). In February this year, Nayak had apparently disbursed the amount showing undue favour to a local computer institution in violation of financial norms.
The IPS officer was also charged with furnishing false and fabricated documents, money bills and utilisation and course completion certificates and flouting official orders, for which the State Government sustained a huge loss.
Five others, including an OPS officer and a senior steno, are also booked in this case and they are already cooling their heels behind the bars after their arrests last month.
