NEW DELHI/BHUBANESWAR: The ruling BJP in India on Tuesday came down heavily on Justin Trudeau led Canada Government after Canadian Sikhs , mostly pro-Khalistani supporters, held protests outside Indian diplomatic missions in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver and burning the Indian flag and hitting a cardboard figure of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with shoes.
In Toronto, demonstrators even went to the extent of burning the Indian flag and hitting a cardboard figure of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with shoes. About 100 protesters took part in Toronto and nearly 200 in Vancouver.
Sharply reacting to it, BJP National Vice President Baijayant Jay Panda, said ‘Deeply troubling to witness the acts of disrespect towards the Indian flag and PM Modi in Toronto and Vancouver,’.
‘Deeply troubling to witness the acts of disrespect towards the Indian flag and PM Modi in Toronto and Vancouver. It is crucial for nations to uphold the values of respect, unity, and mutual understanding. Canada, once a beacon of peace and mutual respect, has now become a staging ground for hate speech, sectarian violence, & safe harbour for terrorist groups, the BJP National VP said in an X Post.
“It’s high time Canada’s current administration, revisits its foreign policy choices & blinkered support for those who foster hate & violence. The world is watching, Canada. Canadian Sikhs held protests outside Indian diplomatic missions in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver. In Toronto, demonstrators even went to the extent of burning the Indian flag and hitting a cardboard figure of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with shoes. About 100 protesters took part in Toronto and nearly 200 in Vancouver,’ the senior BJP leader added.
The spotlight is now firmly on Canada’s Sikh community, which is the largest Sikh population outside of Punjab. They have in the past been a subject of contention between the two nations. India has previously labelled Hardeep Singh Nijjar a “terrorist”.
