BHUBANESWAR:   State capital attracts visitors for its decentralized waste management practices. Now, it is not limited to the country only, even visitors from the bordering countries have shown their interest regarding the practice. Today, a team of high-level officials representing Govt. of Bhutan have completed their exposure in the Basuaghai Wealth Centre, managed by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The high-level delegation from Bhutan comprises a six-member team and they underwent the orientation by Odisha Urban Academy. The team visited the wealth Centre at Basuaghai where the activities undertaken in the Micro Composting Centre (MCC) & Material Recovery Facility (MRF) here; were observed by the members. The team spirit, division of labour, coordination among the work force, use of personal protective equipment, process of segregation, waste collection and above all; the dedicated engagement of local community members to carry forward this decentralized waste management process were quite inspiring for the visitors.

Decentralized waste management model is a community driven initiative ,and the  current urbanization adopts such model based on waste management rule. Such practice enhances community cooperation for better city sanitation thereby promoting sustainability; told commissioner Sri Rajesh Prabhakar Patil. Recently we have transformed garbage vulnerable points to beauty spots in different parts of the city with visible community participation.

Team Bhutan appreciated BMC’s effort in engaging community, concept of Swachha Sathi, e- waste management that reflect an exemplary decentralized waste management initiative and provide learning opportunity for at par ULBs. Engaging marginalized communities through groups for city sanitation is a clearcut example of inclusive waste management; told the team members. They were also oriented on facilities provided to the wealth center workers and their command over the assigned duties.

The team was accompanied by the Assistant Commissioner Sri N. Ganesh Babu who briefed every detail of the center and the management in exigencies. He also highlighted the continued cooperation of Corporation body for a hassle-free management of the system.
