BHUBANESWAR:Surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here have been successful in restoring the shivered finger of a nine year old boy recently.

Ritish Kumar Behera’s index finger, while he was trying to close an iron gate at his home at Dampara in Cuttack district, accidentally got jammed. The finger was completely shivered from his hand.

His father, Ram Chandra Behera, rushed him to several private hospitals for treatment but nothing could be done. He then came to the Burns, Plastic and Cosmetic surgery department of IMS and SUM Hospital, the faculty of medicine of the SOA Deemed to be University, where Dr. Sushanta Kumar Mishra decided to take up microsurgery to restore the shivered finger.

A five-member team of surgeons, led by Dr. Mishra, successfully put the finger back on the child’s palm. The surgeon said that the boy would be able to move the finger normally within a few days.
