BHUBANESWAR:  Continuing with its resolve to embrace advanced cutting edge technology, the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here has installed the state-of-the-art Flexible Endoscopy and Stroboscopy in its Department of Ear, Nose and Throat which can enable early detection and treatment of cancer in these regions.

This advanced equipment features a high definition camera system which enables thorough examination of the upper airway extending from the nose to the windpipe, Dr. Soumya Ranjan Das, Professor and Head of the Department of ENT, said.

The new equipment will help doctors to diagnose and treat a wide range of respiratory issues, sinus diseases, nosebleeds, ulcers and tumours in the nose, throat and windpipe more effectively, he said.

Pointing out that there has been a significant rise in the number of patients with cancer of nose, throat, voice box and wind pipe due to increase in air pollution, presence of carcinogen substances in food items, smoking and consumption of alcohol and tobacco, Dr. Das said this advanced equipment has the capability to detect cancer early and treat the same thereby saving precious lives.

Additionally, the Stroboscopy component of the equipment significantly improves the diagnosis of patients with voice abnormalities including identifying early-stage larynx or voice box cancers which were previously went undetected by conventional endoscopy, he said.

In contrast to rigid endoscopy, patients feel comfortable with this advanced thinly built flexible endoscopy and tolerate the examination well. Notably, this endoscopy is specifically suitable for infants and children with voice and breathing difficulties, Dr. Das said.
