CUTTACK/BHUBANESWAR:In a proactive move to strengthen traffic safety across the region, Dr. Satyajit Naik, IPS, DIG of Police (Central Range), has issued a set of specialized directions to the Superintendents of Police (SsP) under his jurisdiction. These measures coincide with the Government of Odisha’s observance of National Road Safety Month beginning January 1, 2026.
The following eight-point directive aims to achieve “Zero Fatalities” through a blend of stringent enforcement and community engagement.
High-Visibility Policing: All SsP are directed to augment police presence and visibility on the roads, specifically targeting peak hours and identified high-accident-prone “Black Spots.”
Intensified Anti-Drunken Driving Drive:
Units will conduct frequent, surprise breathalyzer tests. Strict legal action will be mandated for violators to deter impaired driving.
Speed Monitoring in Sensitive Zones:
Special focus will be placed on speed limit enforcement in vulnerable areas, including school zones, hospitals, and high-traffic marketplaces.
Strict Compliance with Safety Gear:
Rigorous checks for the mandatory use of helmets (for both rider and pillion) and seatbelts will be carried out across all urban and rural stretches.
Multi-Channel Awareness Campaigns:
Districts are encouraged to organize awareness rallies and robust social media campaigns to sensitize citizens on road safety protocols.
Inter-Departmental Synergy: Active coordination with the State Transport Authority (STA) and transport officials is required to ensure vehicles meet safety standards and fitness norms.
Rapid Accident Response:
Police personnel must ensure an immediate response to road accidents, focusing on the “Golden Hour” to provide life-saving assistance to victims.
Data-Driven Strategic Planning: All units will be required to meticulously collect and analyze accident data to identify emerging risk patterns and implement corrective infrastructural measures.
”Public safety is our paramount priority,” stated Dr. Naik. “These directives are designed not just for enforcement, but to build a lasting culture of road safety and responsibility among the citizens of Odisha.
