Situation in Sambalpur now under control, claims DGP, No Internet Services till April 17 Morning

SAMBALPUR/BHUBANESWAR:   The Naveen Patnaik led Odisha Government State on Saturday extended suspension of the internet services in the western town of Sambalpur by 48 hours (two days). As per the order of State Home Department, access of internet and data services including WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and other social media in violence-hit Sambalpur town will continue to be banned till 10 am of April 17, 2023.

Earlier, section 144 had been imposed in the western Odisha town after the violence broke out between two groups during Hanuman Jayanti procession on April 12. At least 10 police personnel and several residents were severely injured in the clash while more than 30 people have been arrested till date in connection with the violence along with dozen over detained at various police stations.

The curfew in Sambalpur town is in force with immediate effect for an indefinite period following violence. Sources said that some shops were torched ransacked last night following which the district administration decided to declare curfew in the region.

DGP SK Bansal while claiming the situation now under control said “There were some unpleasant incidents took place at some places in Sambalpur yesterday night for which we have sent some extra police forces to ensure peace and tranquility. The senior officials are reviewing the situation and currently the overall situation is under control. However, necessary action will be taken against those people who had either provoked or involved in the violence,”.
