BERHAMPUR: Total knee replacement, a procedure considered one of the modern marvels of science providing significant benefits for patients, is now being done at the Sitalapalli campus of the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here.
The primary advantage of the procedure is dramatic pain relief with most patients experiencing complete or near complete relief of arthritic knee pain after the surgery, Dr. Ranjit Kumar Patra, Asistant Professor in the orthopedics department of the hospital said.
“Beyond pain relief, total knee replacement also restores the normal alignment of the knee joint thereby improving its normal function by replacing the damaged bone and cartilage with artificial components, he said adding “this leads to better balance and stability while improving the quality of life.”
Dr. Patra said that a woman patient who came to the hospital complaining of right knee pain and deformity for over a year making it difficult for her to walk properly.
Upon thorough examination, it was found that she had advanced osteoarthritis of the right knee with varus deformity and bone loss on the tibial side, Dr. Patra said adding she was also found to be anaemic and hypertensive as also hypothyroid.
She was planned for total knee replacement and considering her unstable condition, severe osteoporosis and bone loss, balancing was done with great care while constrained implants were fixed with bone cement with no intra of post-operative complications. Dr. Sarada Prasanna Dash, Anesthesiologist, and other OT staff were part of the surgical team.
The hospital’s Director Mr. Deba Prasd Dash said nearly 25 surgeries had been conducted within the last one month which included total hip replacement and total knee replacement by the orthopedics department. Besides, surgeries were conducted on patients of the ENT, Gynaecology and Urology departments.The hospital, which was inaugurated on February 14 last, has six modular OTs and 40 ICU beds, he said.
