Odisha Assembly adjourns Sine Die, BJP stages walkout

BHUBANESWAR: The Winter Session of Odisha Assembly was on Thursday adjourned Sine Die with main Oppositions , BJP staging a walkout from the House protesting curtailment of  business days and time period.  The session of the 16th State Legislative Assembly was scheduled to continue till December 19.

Proposal for early closure of the winter session of the House was first raised by BJD MLA Prafulla Samal which was supported by BJD MLAs Amar Satapathy and Pratap Keshari Deb. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh said that many important discussions have been made in the House. The session which started on November 13 has no more legislative business for discussion, he said.

Later, Government chief whip Pramila Mallick moved the motion for early closure of the winter session of the Assembly which was accepted by the Speaker.However, the Opposition strongly protested the decision for early closure of the House and created an uproarious scene.

Leader of the House, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik informed about the list of the session and thanked all for cooperation. Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro also thanked all and announced early closure of the winter session of the House.

The winter session of the Odisha Assembly which started on November 13 had a total of 13 working days. From the very first day, the controversial death of lady PEO Smitarani Biswal marred the House proceeding due to ruckus by Opposition. Later, the paddy procurement issue also rocked the House. Today, the house witnessed an unruly scene over the Tourism Minister’s controversial visit to Hyderabad for a road show of Odisha Tourism.

While 5 proposals were passed, five proposals were discussed during the session. Finance minister Niranjan Pujari had also presented a supplementary budget of Rs 8,126.48 crores for the 2019-20 fiscal year.
