CUTTACK/BHUBANESWAR: Noted poet and Padma Shri Jayanta Mahapatra passes away. He was the first Indian poet to win the Sahitya Akademi award for English poetry.
He breathed his last at the age of 95 while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, after suffering from Pneumonia.
He authored popular collections such as ‘A Rain of Rites’ and ‘Life Signs’, which are regarded as classics in modern Indian English literature.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed grief over the demise of renowned author and poet Padma Shri Jayanta Mahapatra.
The Chief Minister has announced that the late poet will be cremated with full state honours on Monday.
