Impact of Cyclone Storm ‘Mocha’ on Odisha looks Remote, know what IMD DG said

BHUBANESWAR:  IMD Director General (DG) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Wednesday that cyclonic storm‘Mocha’ may not affect Odisha. “There is no forecast regarding landfall over India coast till now . The system is unlikely to affect Odisha,” said Mohapatra.

India Meteorological Department had predicated, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over Southeast Bay of Bengal around 6th May. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same region around 7th May. It is likely to concentrate into a depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal on 8th May.

Thereafter, there is a good possibility of its intensification while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal. Details of its path & intensification will be provided after formation of low pressure area. The system is under watch & is being monitored regularly.

The US weather forecast model Global Forecast System (GFS) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) have forecasted the formation of a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal. If the cyclone is formed it will be called ‘Mocha’. The weather forecast model of Windy said that Cyclone Mocha is likely to form by May 11.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting in view of the possible formation of cyclone ‘Mocha’ over the Bay of Bengal.
