BHUBANESWAR: Most of the cyclone models indicated development of a low pressure area over the southeast and adjoining eastern central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and further intensification of the system on October 21 and 22, after which it shall further intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 24.

While the IMD indicated the cyclone’s landfall in the Odisha coast around October 28, other agencies forecasted a landfall by October 25 between West Bengal (Digha) and Bangladesh.

The system will be named as “Cyclone Sitrang” when the system happens. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) centre Bhubaneswar head Dr HR Biswas warned fishermen of the State not to venture into sea from October 23 onwards.

The State Government directed the Collectors of seven coastal districts, Ganjam, Puri, Khordhna, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Baleswar, to stay prepared for the cyclone. Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and Fire Service personnel are on standby to meet any emergency, said Odisha State Disaster Mitigation Authority (OSDMA) Executive Director Gyana Das.
