If ACC Approves: NIT-Rourkela Alumni Soma Mondal becomes 1st Women Chairman of SAIL

NEW DELHI/BHUBANESWAR: Soma Mondal is likely to become first woman Chairman of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) under the Ministry of Steel led by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

 Her appointment is subject to approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). If the ACC gives its approval, she will make history with the rare distinction of being the first woman chairperson of SAIL.

Mondal is presently Director (Commercial) with SAIL. Apart from Mondal, 6 others also were shortlisted but the sources said, the lady mandarin has emerged as common choice for the post of SAIL Chairman.

Apart from Mondal, Anirban Dasgupta, Mahesh Chand Agrawal , Arvind Kumar Singh, Brijendra Pratap Singh, Atul Batt and Rakesh Tumane were in race.

In the incumbent Anil Kumar Chaudhary has assumed the position of Chairman of SAIL on 22nd September 2018 and is due to retire on December 31st 2020, according to the official notification issued on September 21

She completed her graduation from the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in 1984 in Electrical Engineering. She was a Trainee in NALCO and was also involved in various project implementation activities as a part of the Technology Cell.

She is appraised for her notable contribution to the Aluminium Industry and in various Industry forums. She has also designed devising marketing strategies for different products in the Domestic & Oversea market. She has also been actively involved in the launch of a variety of new products by the company.

Under her direction a few fundamental improvement activities were actualized in Marketing and Materials Management capacities at NALCO.

In March 2017, she assumed as the Director (Commercial) as the first woman director of SAIL. At that particular time the organisation was a gander at a significant jump forward in marketing volumes out of its modernised plants.
