SAMBALPUR/BHUBANE SWAR: The Mahanadi River and its distributaries are all set to witness increase in water level in lower catchments after Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district released this year’s first flood water, on Sunday.
An alert has also been sounded by the authorities, especially for the downstream areas in view of the release of water from Hirakud.
Official sources said the flood water was firstly released from sluice gate number 7 of the dam at 9 am. Later, four mote gates of the reservoir will be opened to release the flood water. Total 5 gates will be opened today.
Hirakud Dam has 98 gates including 64 sluice gate and 34 others.
