BHUBANESWAR: Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to occur in coastal and north Odisha as a well-marked low pressure area, which formed over the north Bay of Bengal on Wednesday morning, lay over north-west Bay and its neighbourhood, according to the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), SOA Deemed to be University, here.
The system was likely to move in a westerly direction towards Chhattisgarh and central India, a CEC bulletin said.Under its influence, moderate to heavy rainfall was likely to occur in most places in the districts of Khurda, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri and Balasore on Thursday while heavy precipitation was expected in the districts of Deogarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir and Nuapada on Thursday and Friday, it said.
This is the fourth low pressure which has formed over the Bay of Bengal during the month of August.The rains, the bulletin said, would occur in the catchment areas of the Brahmani and Budhabalanga rivers as also in the upper catchment of the Mahanadi river on Thursday and Friday.
Meanwhile, another low pressure area was likely to form over the north-west Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood around August 24 which could trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall in the catchments of lower and upper Mahanadi, Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, Baitarani and Brahmani between August 23 and 26.
