BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Prisons Department was on Wednesday announced that it has already released a total of 16,639 Under Trial Prisoners and 150 convicts during the period March 20-July 28, 2020 (i.e. 20.3.2020 to 28.7.2020) to decongest jails and curb the possible spread of COVID-19 in them, various state governments have begun releasing inmates – convicts and under-trials – either on parole or on bail.
While16,639 Under Trial Prisoners and 150 convicts were released, 1202 prisoners were shifted from overcrowded Jails to less crowded Jails in the State, the Department said.
As directed by High Powered Committee, the Under Trial Review Committees of 30 Districts having District Judges, District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, Secretary DLSA & Jail Superintendents as members had taken conscious decisions on merit for ensuring decongestion of Jails as above.
