BHUBANESWAR: A healthy lifestyle and periodic monitoring of different organs can help in keeping cancer at arm’s length, Prof. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Vice-Chancellor of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), has said.
Cancer can be transmitted genetically but smoking, consumption of tobacco, intake of junk food and sedentary habits are also contributing factors for the rise in the number of cancer cases, Prof. Mahapatra, also a renowned neurosurgeon, said while addressing members of the NSS at SOA on Thursday which was observed as World Cancer Day.
“Every person has onco gene in the body which lies in dormant form but it can become active at anytime leading to cancerous growth anywhere. Cancer can occur at any age,” he said adding early detection can lead to cure.
Breast and cervical cancer were most commonly found in women while men were afflicted with oral, oesophageal and stomach cancer, he said.SOA’s NSS Chief Coordinator Dr. N.K.Sharma and other NSS officials were present in the meeting where Prof. Mahapatra also had a question-answer session with the students.
