BHUBANESWAR:Dr. Pradeep Kumar Panigrahi, Member of Parliament from Berhampur, today expressed deep concern over the incident of three migrant workers from Laxminarayanpur village in Ganjam district falling victim to smuggling and exploitation in Tamil Nadu.
In an official letter to Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, Dr. Panigrahi has highly appreciated the proactive role of the Berhampur Police. The MP said, “Due to the timely steps taken by SP Sarvana Vivek M. and the Digpahandi Police Team, our youths who were in captivity in Tamil Nadu have been rescued, which proves the efficiency of the police administration in our state.”
For not just immediate relief, but also a permanent solution and reform to the ‘Dadan problem’, Dr. Panigrahi has made some important proposals to the state government:
Digital Tracking: A mandatory real-time portal system for registration of migrant workers.
Migrant Security Insurance: Special insurance benefits from the state government for workers working outside Odisha.
Panchayat Empowerment: Granting legal powers to Sarpanches to inspect and supervise labour contractors.Anti-Human Trafficking Cell: Strengthening surveillance at railway stations and bus terminals to identify illegal employers.
The Brahmapur police have done a commendable job, but the long-term solution is to create local employment and implement a ‘Safe Migration Protocol’ to protect the rights and dignity of every Odia worker, Dr. Panigrahi emphasized.
