BHUBANESWAR:Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today visited the ‘Shantistupa’ at the foot of Dhauligiri in Bhubaneswar and learnt about the history and background of the Ashoka Edict from ASI officials.

Shri Pradhan first visited the temples, historical sites and places of interest at the foot of Dhauligiri. He spoke to the tourists and students who were coming to visit Dhauligiri. He also drank akhu juice and spoke to the shopkeepers there. Speaking to the media on this occasion, he said that Dhauli is a symbol of Odia pride, self-respect and strength. I am very happy and proud to have spent some time here. It was at this holy foothills that the great Kalinga War was fought in 261 BC. Our ancestors fought on this land with indomitable courage till their last breath. The importance and history of this land are unparalleled.

Similarly, the Ashoka Edict at the foot of Dhauligiri records the expansion of the Kalinga Empire, the events of the Kalinga War, Emperor Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism, and the change from Chandashoka to Dharmashoka. He said that this Edict is a priceless treasure to know the history of politics, culture, religion, and script of ancient Kalinga.

Shri Pradhan further said, “We will all strive to pave the way for a developed Odisha and a developed India under the “Purrooday” mission of the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, based on the heritage of the Dhauli and Kalinga Empires. The goal of a developed Odisha and a developed India will be achieved only if we make collective efforts to connect India with the indigenous economy, keep the environment clean and accelerate economic growth.”
