Dharmendra Pradhan releases NIRF’s India Rankings 2025

NEW DELHI: The National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings reflect the strength of our institutions and the trust of our students, said Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while releasing the “India Rankings – 2025” under NIRF, published by the Ministry of Education, in New Delhi today.

Congratulating all the institutions that have made it to this year’s rankings, he said that NIRF has become a national benchmark today. The National Education Policy 2020 has laid out a roadmap for the development of our higher education, which also includes a plan to improve the ranking of higher education institutions. NIRF has emerged as a reliable pillar in our journey to make India a knowledge powerhouse. We need to set a high benchmark in our accreditation framework. NIRF will evolve into one of the best ranking frameworks. With a more data-driven approach, more ranking parameters, categories and more institutions can be added.

The Union Education Minister further said that we are ready to take a big leap. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a clear call for a developed and self-reliant India by 2047. We have got ‘Swaraj’, now we have to fight for our ‘prosperity’. Our educational institutions are at the core of this. Our institutions have to play a leading role in preparing a roadmap for ‘prosperity’ and ‘self-reliance’. He called upon all our educational institutions to become fertile ground for innovation and entrepreneurship and join the NIRF framework.

The first edition of the India Rankings was released in 2016 in one category and three subject domains namely Universities, Engineering and Management and Pharmacy. Subsequently, new categories and subject domains were added from 2017 to 2025. This time, IIT Madras retained the top spot in the overall category for the seventh consecutive year. The top 100 in the overall category includes 24 state government universities, 22 private deemed universities, 19 IITs and IIScs, 9 private universities, 8 NITs, 7 central universities, 5 medical institutes under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 4 IJRs, 1 college and IARI under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. IISc Bengaluru is ranked first in the universities category, IIM Ahmedabad in the management category and AIIMS Delhi in the medical category. Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi tops the rankings in Pharmacy for the second consecutive year.

The event was attended by Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukant Majumdar, Secretary, Department of Higher Education Dr. Binit Joshi, Chairman, AICTE Prof. TG Sitaram, Chairman, NETF, NAAC and NBA Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Vice Chancellors and Directors of various higher educational institutions.
