Dharmendra Pradhan attends 126th birth anniversary celebration of Utkal Keshari Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab in Cuttack

CUTTACK/BHUBANESWAR:Odisha’s great personality ‘Utkal Keshari’ Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab enhanced the pride of Odia as a national leader from the state to the central level. He was a wise leader in fulfilling the interests of Odia, said Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while attending the 126th birth anniversary celebrations of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab held at Sarala Bhawan in Cuttack on Friday.

In a program organized by the Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab Jayanti Committee, Shri Pradhan paid tribute to Dr. Mahatab and said that Mahatab was not only a freedom fighter, he was also a great reformer, great orator, famous politician, poet, novelist, columnist, historian and journalist. A society or nation cannot run on mercy. It is not enough to cry for rights. Dr. Mahatab was such a leader who served the interests of Odia. With the design of Hirakud Dam, he paved the way for flood control, irrigation, and electricity generation. In this way, in the interests of the state, the ruling opposition is coming together in our neighboring states, but we are not able to come together in our state. We all need to come together for the interests of Odisha, he said.
Dr. Mahatab’s biggest and most important contribution after independence was the political unification of Odisha. He, along with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, played a major role in merging 26 princely states into the state of Odisha. His most notable work is ‘History of Odisha’, which describes the history of Odisha. Former US President Abraham Lincoln said that if you want your name to be remembered after your death, then either do something worth writing or write something worth reading. Mahatab has done something in whose name history is written. Mahatab has written something that we read in the name of history, which acts as a mirror of the future. Many policy makers are following this.

The Union Minister further said that literature is needed to introduce the society. In this way, Dr. Mahatab also promoted social welfare consciousness through his writings. He was the person who could influence Odia literature the most. By giving birth to a strong newspaper like Prajatantra, he gave a new identity to the Odia media. ‘Meena Bazaar’ and ‘Gaan Majlis’ are some of his works. In 1936, the state completed 100 years of formation of an independent province based on the Odisha language. Dr. Mahatab was one of the people who helped create language consciousness among Odisha people like Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, Fakir Mohan Sahabi, Kabir Radhanath Ray, Madhusudan Das. Dr. Mahatab worked as a baghmi to take a nation from humiliation to asmita. While he was in Ahmednagar Fort Jail, he wrote the book of Odisha History on the question of Odisha history.

The country is currently celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of the Iron Man and ‘Bharat Ratna’ Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The entire country is currently celebrating 150 glorious years of ‘Vande Mataram’ composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. This song gave us the strength to fight for our state. He expressed his opinion that plans will be made to expand the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Dr. Mahatab at the national level. On this occasion, Shri Pradhan suggested taking responsibility for 10 issues, starting from the newborn to the school students of Odisha, regardless of their views.

During his visit to Cuttack, Shri Pradhan had darshan of Goddess Cuttack Chandi, the presiding deity of Cuttack. Shri Pradhan was welcomed by the workers at various places.
