NEW DELHI: Congress MLA from Odisha’s Cuttack, Sofia Firdous while addressing a press meet at Party’s National Headquarters’, Indira Bhawan in New Delhi on Tuesday demanded Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi should take responsibility and resign from his post after his failure to deliver jjustice to FM University girl student , who is struggling with life at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.
Along with Mahila Congress National president Alaka Lamba, Congress MLA from Cuttack, Sofia Firdous said “ Today, Odisha is once again in the headlines, but not for development, rather for crimes against women, she said adding “ A 20-year-old student studying at Fakir Mohan College in Balasore raised her voice against the HOD who demanded sexual favours,”
‘But when she failed to get justice even after reaching out to Odisha’s Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi and Chief Minister Majhi, she set herself on fire. That girl put her life at stake to expose the failure of Odisha’s system,” the Congress MLA alleged while addressing the press meet.
She said “ This is a wake-up call for us, so that we can raise our voices against the atrocities faced by women. The Chief Minister should take responsibility and resign from his post , a Judicial inquiry should be conducted in this matter so that the culprits are punished,” adding Prime Minister Narendra Modi should break their silence and answer to the people of Odisha
‘This is a serious issue. Today, crimes against women are happening everywhere in Odisha. Schoolgirls are getting pregnant. A college student has attempted to take her life on campus. Women and girls are not safe anywhere. The BJP government will have to answer and act on our demands,” she alleged.
Mahila Congress National president Lamba asked “ Where is the National Commission for Women sleeping in the Odisha case? Has any member of the National Commission for Women tried to meet that victimized girl? If not, why? Is there any pressure on you?
“If this were a non-BJP ruled state or an election-bound state, the Women’s Commission would have reached there. This proves that the entire system is running at the behest of the BJP,” she said.
In the Rajasthan elections, Modi ji gave many speeches about women’s safety. Why is he silent today? The Odisha government has completely failed, she added.
