BHUBANESWAR: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in the State on Monday secured or was leading in a total 763 of the total 851 Zilla Parishad (ZP) seats in the three-tier panchayat election-2022. The party is all set to form all the 30 Zilla Parishads.

The counting of votes was continuing and the final results were expected to be announced by the State Election Commission (SEC) in late night. The BJP with 44 seats and the Congress with 37 were distant second and third, respectively. Independent and other candidate were leading in three and four seats, respectively.

Of the 620 seats already declared, the BJD won 552, the BJP 31, the Congress 30 and others seven. The BJD has already won more than half ZP seats in all districts. The results showed the BJP failed to open accounts in at least 10 districts and the Congress in 18 districts.

It is the disgraceful lack of leadership which is responsible for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ignoble debacle in the panchayat elections in the State. The party has even begun virtually losing its position to the Congress as the State’s second opposition force. The BJP’s State leadership has miserably failed to inspire the party’s rank and file. And its national leaders seem to have completely ignored the party’s interests in the State.
