BENGALURU: The birth anniversary of legendary Odia poet Gangadhar Meher, affectionately revered as Swabhaba Kabi, was celebrated with great enthusiasm and cultural vibrancy by Meher (Bhulia) Paribar, Bengaluru. While this celebration is traditionally observed across Odish, the Bengaluru edition marks a significant step in taking the legacy of Gangadhar Meher beyond Odisha’s borders, gradually making it a pan-Indian cultural observance.

Organized by the Meher Bhulia Samaj Bengaluru, the event brought together about 150 members of the Odia community on August 10 from the various parts of the city beating long traffic jams, in the community hall of Raja Ritz Avenue, an upscale residential society in Hoodi, Whitefield.

The program began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by Pooja and floral tributes to Maa Samaleswari and Kabi Gangadhar Meher. What followed was a vibrant lineup of literary and cultural activities, including poetry recitations, Sambalpuri Dance, a Sambalpuri fashion show, quiz contests, and drawing competitions for children. Mehers from length and breadth of Bengaluru flocked to the event while displaying a unique bond of friendship and brotherhood to honour the legendary poet on his 164th birth anniversary. Sumptuous Odia vegetarian delicacies were served to all. The participation of children in various activities furthers the rich legacy and culture of Odisha to the next generation.

The Bhulia community, known for its remarkable weaving heritage and custodianship of the globally renowned Sambalpuri textiles, takes immense pride in honoring Gangadhar Meher—whom they consider a guiding force and cultural icon. Their rich artistic traditions continue to carry forward the poet’s ethos of simplicity, truth, and deep cultural consciousness.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Firoj Kumar Meher, one of the founding members of Bhulia Samaj in Bengaluru, remarked, “Gangadhar Meher was a visionary who seamlessly blended literary brilliance with the soul of Odisha’s rural life. His poetry mirrored the trials, dreams, and dignity of the common man. We must draw inspiration from his life and values. Living by his ideals is the most meaningful tribute we can offer.”

Now in its second year of celebration, the event witnessed double the participation from last year and a great spirit of enthusiasm and social bonding. “Events like this not only allow us to honor our beloved poet but also bring our scattered community together in a city as fast-paced as Bengaluru. It truly feels like a home away from home.” remarked several participants. They also noted the addition of new cultural programs this year, which enhanced audience engagement and participation. With growing excitement, the community pledged to make future editions even more impactful and inclusive.

Born in 1862, Gangadhar Meher emerged as one of the pioneers of modern Odia literature. A self-educated poet, his writings are marked by lyrical elegance, deep moral insight, and a profound connection to nature and rural life. His contributions not only enriched the Odia language but also instilled a strong sense of cultural pride among Odias.

The celebration of Gangadhar Meher Jayanti in Bengaluru stands as a testament to the timeless influence of the poet and reinforces a cultural bridge that connects generations of Odias with their literary heritage, even beyond their native soil.
