BARAGARH: The world’s largest open-air theatre, Baragarh Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav, showcases the pinnacle of public devotion and cultural heritage. This grand event, deeply rooted in the district’s tradition, was graced by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, who lauded the festival’s significance in uniting people and preserving ancient customs.
During the Raj Sabha, chaired by District Collector and Dhanuyatra Committee President Aditya Goyal, with coordination by convener Sureshwar Satapathy, the Chief Minister made significant announcements:
Permanent Raj Darbar Construction: Rs12.8 crore allocated for creating a permanent stage for the festival.
Anicut on Yamuna (Jira) River: Rs80 crore for the construction of an anicut to connect Mathura Nagari and Gopa Pura.
Beautification of Baragarh Canal: Rs30 crore allocated to enhance the canal’s aesthetic appeal.
Remembering Heroes and Honoring Heritage
The Chief Minister paid homage to local freedom fighters like Veer Surendra Sai and Madho Singh, emphasizing Baragarh’s rich history in both peaceful and armed freedom struggles. He highlighted the district’s global identity through Sambalpuri textiles and literature, particularly the works of Swabhaba Kabi Gangadhar, which have become timeless.
Commitment to Development
Mr. Majhi highlighted his government’s dedication to fulfilling promises, including: Enhanced Festival Support: Increased state assistance for Dhanuyatra to Rs1 crore. UNESCO Recognition: Efforts underway to gain UNESCO recognition for the festival. Modern Documentation: Launch of a dedicated website for Dhanuyatra documentation. Canal Revitalization: Rs900 crore allocated for canal repairs and beautification across the state.
To nurture young and emerging artists, the government plans to collaborate with the National School of Drama. Training programs will commence soon to encourage artistic growth.
Chief Minister Majhi emphasized the people-centric approach of his government. The Chief Minister’s grievance cell, previously limited to Bhubaneswar, will now be expanded across the state, including Baragarh, ensuring public concerns are addressed promptly.
The Chief Minister was honored with a commemorative memento and traditional uttariya by Maharaj Kansa. Distinguished attendees included MP Pradeep Purohit, MLAs Ashwini Kumar Sarangi, Nihar Ranjan Mahananda, Sanat Gartia, and IG Himanshu Lal, among others. The event concluded with a vibrant celebration organized by Rang Mahal Committee, led by Akrura Mallik.
Baragarh Dhanuyatra stands as a testament to the district’s cultural glory, showcasing its unique identity to the world while strengthening community bonds through the preservation of tradition and art.
