BHUBANESWAR: After Nepal National Human Rights Commission, India’s University Grant Commission Serves Notices on Achyuta Samanta led KIIT University in Odisha, Union Education Ministry ‘s regulatory body, the University Grants Commission, has sought a report from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology on the recent events involving the suicide of a Nepali student on its campus followed by student protests, ill-treatment of Nepalese students on campus and threats of eviction.
The news of a UGC inquiry comes amid an ongoing high-level committee probe led by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department of the Odisha Government
The Nepal Commission has written to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India requesting to investigate the truth of the incident in which a Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University
In the letter, the Nepal Commission has requested the NHRC to investigate the suspicious death and provide justice to the victims, to provide speedy justice to the students who were beaten and mistreated in the university, to ensure complete security of the Nepali students and ensure that they can study in a fear-free environment, and to bring the university officials and individuals involved in the incident to justice.
