CUTTACK/BHUBANESWAR: Man from Bihar’s Champaran district and 1986 batch IPS officer Abhay was on Monday took the baton of Police Headquarters’ of Odisha in Cuttack from the in charge Satyajit Mohanty. Abhay was appointed as DGP Odisha on 21 November by the State Government in place of controversial BK Sharma.
Recipient of Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service and President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, he has served as Director, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad till he took over as DGP, Odisha.
Later flanked by senior IPS officer Soumendra Priyadarshi, new DGP told reporters that offences against women and weaker sections will remain in the focus with best investigation and fast conviction and his main priorities will be to ensure effective implementation of Mo Sarkar program and 5T initiative in policing.
DGP said “We will work towards containing and controlling this menace. Organized crime or operation of mafias will be monitored and fully controlled”.
He has earlier headed Odisha Crime Branch and Odisha Special Branch. He served as SP Berhampur, Malkangiri and several other districts during his career as a young IPS officer.
Abhay had long innings in Central Police Organizations like CBI, BPR&D, NCB, CRPF and SBPNPA.
The IPS officer has also served on international deputation to Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation.During his seven years tenure in CBI, apart from heading Anti Corruption Branch of CBI in Odisha, he was DIG of Bank Frauds and Security Cell in Delhi.He was also Director of CBI Academy.
Abhay has also served as ADG (Training) in CRPF and worked as Director (Training) in BPR&D for two years.
He headed CBI Academy for two years and during his commonwealth assignment, worked on training and capacity building.Abhay as DG Narcotics Control Bureau from January, 2018 to July, 2019 led the Indian delegation for agency level talks with Myanmar, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Russia and Indonesia.He represented India in UN Conference on Narcotic Drugs Control.
